'Immerse' yourself in the Nature Park Tyrolean River Lech. An area of some 41 square kilometres is considered worthy of protection - for good reason, as everyone will immediately recognize.
The Nature Park Tyrolean River Lech with its impressive natural features is one of the most beautiful and unspoilt landscapes of the Alps. The remarkably few infringements of the area make it really unique and worth conserving!
In 2004 the wild River Lech with its riverside forests and tributaries was declared a protected area and was awarded the officially recognized rating 'Nature Park'.
On an area of some 41 square kilometres and a length of 62 kilometres, the Nature Park stretches from the municipalities of Steeg to Vils on the border to southern Germany and offers a unique and particularly valuable natural landscape. The distinctive character of the region and the Nature Park is formed by the wild River Lech with its branching course and its extensive adjoining riverside forests.
The alpine wild landscape of the River Lech lies embedded between the 'Allgäuer' and 'Lechtal' Alps, which because of its size and shape is of international significance. As a result of its natural dynamism and free creative power, the Lech shapes large banks of gravel and sand which are continuously changing their form.
The Lech and its riverside thickets represent a last refuge for many plants and animal species which were once widespread in wild river landscapes. Here many botanical and zoological rarities such as the bee orchid or the river plover may be found.
The Nature Park sees its responsibility in preserving the natural landscape in all its variety and beauty. As well as a protective function, the Nature Park also tries to foster positive impulses for the areas recreation, education, research and regional development.
