Churches and Chapels
The Reutte Nature Park Region is known as the “Region of Chapels” for good reason: numerous churches and chapels shape the landscape, reflecting deep-rooted faith, artistic diversity, and centuries of history. In total, there are more than 50 churches and chapels spread between Weißenbach and Vils – some standing in secluded spots on hillsides, others nestled within the villages of the valley – giving the region a serene, almost mystical aura.
Thanks to careful restoration work, many of these spiritual places have been preserved in their original character to this day. With the exception of the Marienkapelle in Ehenbichl and the Mooskirchle in Lechaschau, all the sites listed below are protected monuments and part of the official register of historically significant buildings in the region – a powerful testament to their cultural and historical importance.
This gallery is completed by two remarkable sacred landmarks just beyond the region’s borders: the magnificent Wieskirche in Steingaden – a Rococo masterpiece and UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983 – and the impressive Ettal Abbey, an active Benedictine monastery. Both are among the most outstanding sights in the Alpine region and are well worth a visit.
For those wishing to experience history, symbolism, and sacred architecture firsthand, taking the time to explore some of these special places is truly rewarding.
