Recharge your batteries in the Reutte Nature Park Region Ice bathing

The Reutte Nature Park Region is not only known for swimming in crystal-clear lakes in summer, but is also a real “hot” tip for water lovers in winter. As soon as the temperatures drop and the lakes go into hibernation, snow-covered shores and dreamy winter landscapes beckon with their breathtaking atmosphere. The partially frozen waters in the nature park enchant with a certain peace and tranquillity that create a very special atmosphere.

“Winter bathing”, also known as “ice bathing”, offers an absolute freshness kick with an extra portion of immunity. This generally refers to bathing in water at a temperature close to freezing point. Immersing yourself up to your chest in cold water causes your body temperature to drop very quickly. The body's reaction to this is rapid heat production.

Preparation with the right breathing technique: The special thing about ice bathing is the right preparation with breathing technique. The best known is the “Wim Hof method” - the aim here is to inhale deeply and exhale deeply again with around 30 to 40 repetitions without a break. The air is then held for around one minute. Two runs are recommended at the beginning.

The ice bath: A slow start up to the knees with calm, regular breathing is recommended. Take two deep breaths and then immerse yourself in the water up to your collarbones - the palms of your hands should also remain dry. The contraction and subsequent widening of the blood vessels accelerates blood circulation and stabilizes the circulatory system. It has also been proven that regular winter bathing strengthens the immune system and improves physical performance.

Warming up: In order for the ice bath to have its full effect, it is important to get the body going afterwards with a targeted warm-up (for at least as long as you were in the water). The horse stance is a fundamentally important exercise for this, which is also known in various martial arts forms for its ability to develop strength, stability and endurance.

Safety: The event is supported by the Reutte water rescue service.

Attention! What you should always bear in mind when winter bathing:

  • The duration of the bath should be adapted to the water temperature and your own physical condition and should not be longer than a few seconds/minutes!
  • Breathing should be calm and controlled!
  • If you have health problems, e.g. cardiovascular problems, etc., you should refrain from bathing!
  • Only ice bathe in company - it's also much more fun!
  • Thick clothing and exercise ensure that the body slowly warms up again and prevents hypothermia.

Tip: The best place to warm up is of course in a cozy hut, by a heated stove and a warming soup or cup of tea. Click here for our winter magic huts.
