Every year, one location along the Via Claudia Augusta is honoured as the “Destination of the Year.”
Even the Celts, Raeti, Veneti, Ligurians, and Etruscans maintained lively exchanges with one another. The Romans expanded their road into a Europe-connecting ancient “Alpine highway,” naming it Via Claudia Augusta after Emperor Claudius. This important route between the Danube and the Adriatic or Po was widely used throughout the Middle Ages and modern times, and in part, still is today. It shaped regions, eras, people, and their cultures.
Today, the Via Claudia Augusta is experiencing a new flourishing as Europe’s cultural axis. After Algund in 2014, there is once again a Destination of the Year (LOCUM ANNI), with Reutte in 2025, celebrating the millennia-old connection between northern and southern Europe and inviting everyone to take part.

Town of Reutte / Tyrolean Außerfern
The town of Reutte is located in the Tyrolean Außerfern, just across the German-Austrian border, where the Via Claudia Augusta enters the Alps. To the south rises the Ehrenberg fortress complex, which once served as a stronghold against Bavaria. The Lech River, still largely in its natural state in the Tyrolean section, shapes the region around the town, forming the Reutte Nature Park Region. This wild river has historically controlled the valley and determined the route of the Via Claudia Augusta and its successor, the Salt Road, which helped shape Reutte and brought prosperity. A special feature of the town is the painted facades on many houses, particularly along the historic main street of Reutte.
In and around Reutte, vibrant culture and intact nature come together. Reutte is the perfect choice as the “Destination of the Year 2025” for the Via Claudia Augusta. Throughout the year, the town hosts activities related to the Via Claudia Augusta for local residents and visitors alike, especially for people from other towns along the route. Stay tuned and check back here for updates!
