Winter Hiking and Mountain Hut Delights: Experience Tyrol’s Winter Magic
Since 6 April, Reutte has been home to a new ice cream parlour! Eva’s Eisdeal is located at Zeillerplatz 1 in the newly redesigned Reuttener Untermarkt and has been a great success from day one. Especially on weekends, the charming little ice cream shop is practically flooded with visitors.
I’m already very curious to learn more about the owner, Eva-Maria Kerber, as I meet her for a personal conversation in her own little realm and first ask her to tell me a bit about herself and her background.
Eva-Maria comes from Grän in the Tannheimer Tal and lives with her husband and their two daughters in Breitenwang. After training as a teacher in nutrition, home economics, crafts, and German, she spent almost 20 years working at various schools. In addition, she offered popular themed cooking classes, such as men’s cooking courses or vegetarian cuisine.
The dream of self-employment had been there for quite some time, and it was always clear that it would revolve around cooking and baking. When a friend enthusiastically told her about an ice cream machine she had bought for home - and Eva-Maria decided to get one herself - the turning point came.
She eagerly experimented with recipes and soon realised that this was her professional future: her own ice cream parlour, where she could fully express her creativity and run things exactly the way she wanted. With this clear goal in mind, Eva attended ice cream school and learned the craft from the ground up.
An enquiry with the municipality of Reutte revealed that a suitable shop space was available in the Untermarkt. The attractive premises and the possibility of placing tables and chairs outside the ice cream parlour to sit and relax outdoors sealed the deal - Eva didn’t hesitate for a moment.
The renovation of the shop was tackled with joint effort, the necessary equipment was ordered, a name was chosen, and a fitting logo designed - and then it was time to get started!
"In addition to classic ice cream flavours such as vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry, I always offer a changing selection of flavours and love experimenting with new creations. You’ll find varieties like apple strudel, popcorn, rhubarb, lemon, and mango, as well as blueberry sour cream, turmeric–lemongrass, pumpkin seed, or hazelnut.
With the “Deal of the Day,” I offer a specially curated ice cream sundae of my own creation. Beyond that, every guest can put together their own favourite ice cream sundae and choose from a variety of toppings. If desired, the ice cream creations can also be served in a reusable deposit jar, which can either be returned or taken home."
"I also offer selected coffee specialties made with locally roasted coffee from huangart - including my personal favourite creation, the “Café der Dielerin.” Every coffee is, of course, served with a small scoop of ice cream.
We also prepare fresh bubble waffles using a specially shaped waffle iron. While the waffles are still warm, they’re filled with two scoops of ice cream of your choice and fresh strawberries, then topped with whipped cream, fruit syrup, and sprinkles - just the way you like it."
"Whenever possible, I source ingredients locally - for example, the honey comes from my parents’ hobby beekeeping, and the sea buckthorn syrup is supplied by Aromapflege in Lechaschau. I source the milk from Tirol Milch. I also place great importance on seasonal products - so at the moment, for example, there’s apricot ice cream, while plum will follow in autumn.
My ice cream is completely free from artificial colours and flavourings, and there are always several fruit sorbets available that are lactose-free and vegan.
If you have any other food intolerances, just let me know - I’m happy to accommodate individual needs."
"I also enjoy creating special ice cream flavours for particular occasions. One example is the “Rosy Ice Cream” made with “Miss Rosy Wermut,” which I created for Rosénacht at the end of May for Markus Saletz Lieblingsweine. I’m always delighted to collaborate with local businesses!
Most recently, I created a yoghurt–sea buckthorn ice cream for Aromapflege Evelyn Deutsch. By the way, my ice cream is also available at the Joyce in Kempten - made possible through the great collaboration with Josef Socher, who runs the Joyce next door."
"All my heart and passion for food go into Eva’s Eisdeal. It’s a wonderful feeling to make other people happy by doing something I truly love. Anyone who goes out for ice cream has made a conscious decision to enjoy themselves and treat themselves to something special - and I’m delighted to be able to contribute to that.
My husband, my two daughters, and my mum all help out, and I’m especially happy to have found more than just a reliable employee in my friend Judith.
During the winter months, in addition to the classic ice cream flavours, I’d like to offer homemade cakes and small pastries. In autumn and during Advent, there will also be punch and mulled wine, as well as traditional treats such as Ziachkiachle and doughnuts."
I’d like to thank Eva for the lovely conversation - and, of course, I’m already looking forward to the ice cream I’ll be taking with me right now! :)
